Measles Clinical Features
Clinical Factors
  • Incubation period 10 - 12 days
Prodrome
  • lasts 2 - 4 days (range 1 - 7 days)
  • Stepwise increase in fever to 103° - 105°F or higher
  • Cough, coryza (runny nose), or conjunctivitis
  • Koplik spots, a rash (enanthem) present on mucous membranes
Rash
  • 2-4 days after prodrome, 14 days after exposure
  • Persists 5-6 days
  • Begins on face and head
  • Maculipapular, becomes confluent
  • Fades in order of appearance
Laboratory Diagnosis
  • Isolation of mealses virus from a clinical specimen (eg: urine, nasopharynx))
  • Significant rise in measles IgG by any standard assay (eg: EIA, HA)
  • Positive serologic test for measles IgM antibody
